Affordable Diy Art!

Hey guys, today I thought I'd share my latest Diy project!

I took an old and very dark abstract gallery wrapped canvas and gave it new life with simple primer and paint.  This picture before had colors in browns, reds and teals even.  But recently I've been giving our home a full on re-fresh with cooler colors in silvery blues, creams, corals and gold for contrast.

For my first step I primed the canvas.

I used Zinsser and it worked great!

Next I mixed Martha Stewart's metallic gold craft paint with a little water.  Then I simply brushed the gold paint from left to right over the dried primer leaving white areas periodically.  I started with a paint brush first, then switched to paper towels for a more natural application.

Then it was time to break out some fresh color!  This pale turquoise paint was a $3 sample I had purchased a few months ago.  Again I mixed the paint with a little water.  But this time I used a damp paper towel to apply the paint using quick strokes from left to right.

Okay here it is finished!  Isn't it fun?  I love the watery mix of turquoise, white and gold!  And I also love how the lighter hues work with our new painted gray walls!

This room is a work in progress.  Literally we're re-decorating it one project at a time.  After all, it's primarily where our kids hang out!

Okay, I'm always on the lookout for fun ways to decorate our home without spending a ton of money - especially in our bonus room.  And this project is a great way to add fresh color, subtle pattern, and even a little chic shimmer to any space.

Ahhh, I love fun Diy Art Projects  you can literally finish in a few hours!

Design Board - Classic Coastal!

Hey guys, today I thought I'd share my latest Design Board and the style is Classic Coastal!
Client R
Sources

Heron Family I Print - Art.com   $174.99
Surya Squares Orange Decorative Pillow - Layla Grace   $70
Gold Leaf Convex Wall Mirrors - Layla Grace    $173
New Castle Club Chair - Wayfair     $1,758
Gold Mercury Votives - West Elm   $8
Mongolian Lamb Pillow - West Elm   $169
Similar Gourd Lamp - Overstock.com   $100

I recently met with a client who said their style was traditional and they wanted a whole new look for their family room.  But they didn't want a typical traditional space, they wanted something more.  They wanted some fun color, yet they needed neutral sofas and traditional brown leather tufted club chairs for comfort and function.  They didn't say anything about coastal, but hey...we live in North Carolina after all, so I ran with that ;)

The few coastal elements I did use helped pull the whole room together for a comfortable space with style, color and balance.  My favorite part of this board are the heron prints, and the play on patterns.  Yup, I love mixing patterns!  Okay so there you have it...traditional meets coastal for an eclectic space that is anything but boring!

Diy Painted Gold Mirror ...

I'm so excited about my latest Diy project!  I painted a simple round mirror I purchased at Old Time Pottery for just 39.99 with Martha Stewart's craft paint in metallic gold.  Yes I am a huge fan of gold in home decor & design these days!  Here's my inspiration photo...

I purchased my supplies at Michaels...

Martha Stewart's metallic gold craft paint
Acrylic paint in "burnt umber" (for glaze)

Here's the Before picture of the mirror below.  I loved the round shape, but the color was too flat and dark for the room.

For this project I applied the gold paint in circular motions on the frame of the mirror.  I focused on the top section first, then the bottom, and finally the middle.  I also let each section dry completely before moving onto the next.  And for coverage I used 3 full coats.

The final and most important step in this Diy project was adding glaze.  With a soft cloth I rubbed a brown glaze made with simple "burnt umber" craft paint and water onto the gold frame.  The glaze settles into cracks and crevasses giving a subtle distressed appearance.

And here's my new mirror finished...

Yup I love my new gold mirror!  And this was such a fun week-end project too.  So shop your house.  Do you have a mirror with a great shape but not a great color?  Then it might just be time to get your Gold ON!

Color Inspiration... turquoise & orange!

Hey guys, I hope everyone is having a fun Summer!  Today I am Inspired by the simple color combination - turquoise & orange.  These interior designs below scream vacation getaway don't they, and the colors are so vibrant and energizing!

A wallpaper after my own heart! And the orange and turqoise are GORGEOUS!

Here is another example of spray painting the frames all one color. What really makes the wall interesting is the shape and use of the frames themselves. Here the 'frames' almost become the art with subtle watercolors of shells. Look for interesting details when picking the frames. The ugliest frame can become stunning with a coat of paint!

Ahhh, how FUN!

Well as much as I'd love to spend a few weeks of my Summer vacay in one of these chic spaces above, our vacation plans include a baseball tourney in Myrtle and a dated oceanfront resort with a giant lazy river, gah!  However being together with my family, and seeing my kiddos so happy - I wouldn't trade it for the world!

Happy Summer!
