Aged Wine Crates

...

Did you know you can buy wine crates at Total Wine and other Wine stores for around $5.00? I didn't, until the hubby brought two crates home one day. "Five dollars each?" I said, "that's too good to be true!"

So I put one above our Dining Room Hutch, and liked it...but the light color of the wood just wasn't working with the reds and warmer colors in the room. So I decided to age these crates, and give them instant warmth and character.

And I did it with...MinWax Stain in Special Walnut.

This project was so easy, just brush the stain on, and wipe off. Seriously folks, it doesn't get any easier than this! I repeated this until I found the color I was looking for.
Please note, stain pigments always settle to the bottom of a can. And for this project, I only needed the lightest amount of color. So I did not mix this stain prior to using.

This one's still wet, but doesn't it already look older and warmer? The stain sinks into the wood and brings out the natural variations in the grain.  And here they are finished! Don't they look great? They have such character now and really look old and time worn!

Here's the other above my dining room hutch. These crates are perfect for accessorizing above armoires and hutches, even that odd space above kitchen cabinets!

So now you know...Wine crates only cost around $5.  Love that!

OH!! I LOVE this!! It does look so warm and looks great by the fireplace and on top of the cabinet!!

It would also be good for magazines! (I have too many of those!)

Have a great day!

That's a great idea! I like the idea of using them to hold wood by the fireplace. Great decorative addition to other wine accessories, too. There's a liquor store next to my local Pier 1, so maybe I'll pop in there one day after visiting Pier 1.

Hi Jane, so nice to "meet" you! Love your wine crates, you have really inspired me to do the same. Congrats on your Honest Scrap award, Marian from Mustard Seed gave me one, too. I'm so glad she allowed me to discover you, I am now a fan and a follower.
Have a blessed day!
Anne

Great idea! Thanks for sharing that tip...I always got my moving boxes from Total beverage, but I never thought about getting a wine crate. By the way, it is a riot trying to explain to people why our stuff is packed in dozens of liquor boxes.

I am off to the wine store! I can imagine these as "totes" to deliver Christmas presents during the holidays, trimmed with some greenery and a bow!

Those are great! I have a couple of wine boxes I've been wondering what to do with... I think they've found their calling. By the way, I got my boxes at sams club for free. If you happen to buy the last (or one of the last) bottle of wine in a crate, you can take the crate up front too and they'll just pack your stuff right in it and you can take it home. pretty sweet!

Love the box on the fireplace. Haven't thought of placing a simple box of pinecones by the fireplace. Fab idea!

Had no idea that they were so cheap to come by! I was struggling with what to put in my kitchen. Not anymore!

Hello friends,

The wine crates are made by individual wineries to store and protect their high value wines. It would be great if you provide more details about your site. Thanks a lot....
