Our Kitchen...finally finished!

Hey guys, as you know...our kitchen has been getting a new coat of paint (actually lacquer) over these last few weeks!  And I am so happy to say "IT'S FINISHED!"  Yup, the doors have been re-hung and there is order once again in our home.  If you've forgotten where this makeover began, click here.
Buh bye oaky, hello wonderful...here's what our kitchen looks like now!

The hubby and I chose to keep our existing cabinets.  These are solid oak, custom cabinets...so there was no point in ripping them out!  All they needed was a new finish.  We chose black because we love black furniture, the room gets plenty of light, and our ceilings are tall.

I am simply blown away by how tall my ceilings look after painting the soffets and trim moulding!  And our backsplash looks so much better now with the updated cabinets!

Our stainless steel appliances positively glow in contrast to the black cabinets...love that!  Now if I could just figure out how to keep those little finger prints off the fridge!

That bracket there below the upper cabinet is for decorative purposes only.  The desk area was looking very low in contrast to the big cabinet above.  So we used $9 wood brackets from Lowe's to help connect the two pieces together.  Now the desk area looks more like a custom hutch...such a great inexpensive solution!

The color of the lacquer on these cabinets is called "tobacco".  It's basically black with a small amount of brown added.  The color reads black, but has a warmth and keeps the space from looking too cold and modern.

This green color is very soft and neutral.  The base is a sage green color with a brown glaze on top.  We also used this green color inside the hutch cabinet.

This photo above shows how our kitchen flows right into the family room.  I like the contrast of the black cabinets with the monochromatic family room.

I gotta tell ya...it's so nice to have my kitchen back!  It really is true when they say the kitchen is the heart of the home.  I've said this before, and I'm sure I'll say it again...amazing what a little paint can do isn't it?  Or in this case lacquer!

{Okay, If anyone locally here in Charlotte, NC or surrounding areas would like to learn more about the wonderful painter's who did this work on my kitchen cabinets...check out Lloyd and Bean at their website!  And if you give them a shout...tell them I sent you!

They seriously made my old kitchen...fabulous, and they can do the same for you!}

Beautiful! I bet it IS nice to have your kitchen back. That is the reason I haven't painted my cabinets YET. I want to. BAD. Just the 'mess' of it all and the time to do it.

Your kitchen looks fantastic. I want to go in my kitchen and paint my soffets immediately. I've been debating...should I rip the soffets out? Because I really hate them but your's look like part of the cabinets now. Thanks for the inspiration.

Wow! We've been debating back and forth on painting our kitchen cabinets black, such a BIG step because there is no undoing it. But I LOVE the look. Did you close off the top of the cabinets yourself or was that part of the original design? I really like that also!

Wow! This looks wonderful. I had considered black when we painted our cabinets but my house is kinda dark so we went with white. I LOVE yours though! LOVE IT!

Your kitchen really turned out gorgeous. I love the tint of brown in the black, it makes it look a little softer...great idea! And I agree with the painting the soffit for height! I also like the contrast with the backsplash.

You are making me want to paint my cabinets and I have never really been a black paint person. How inspirational is that??

Nicely done!

OMGoodness, Jane!!! WOW!!!

I love the black, and I am SO glad you saved both money and materials by making what you have currently work for you. There is no point in wasting what works fine, especially when it (obviously) has so much potential!!
I agree that those brackets tie the desk in better, good thinking on that one! Your trim, backsplash and your appliances just POP now! Love it!

I just discovered your blog thru the frugalicious Friday party and I'm totally blown away by this kitchen! The black is awesome! I did the same thing with brackets under my kitchen cabinets a few years ago and really love the built in hutch look it gives them. I went one step further and added a small shelf between the brackets for display.
I'm following you now and plan to join in on your Frugalicious Friday party too!

So beautiful!!! Great tips for an amazing transformation. I have the same soffits and have debated whether or not to paint them. They look great, and you're right, it does make the ceiling look taller.
