Memorial Day - July the 4th Tablescape!

Happy Memorial Day.  I hope everyone is having a wonderful, relaxing week-end with family and friends as we honor those soldiers who so bravely died in battle protecting America's freedom!

I thought I'd share an easy Memorial Day or July the 4th Tablescape!  I saw this idea in Better Homes & Gardens magazine.  The design features a colorful tablescape with a fun centerpiece using baseballs!  And since my 10 year old son plays baseball nearly year-round here in North Carolina...baseballs are easy to come by.

And as you know by now...decorating with items I already have, mixed with a few thrifty finds, is truly one of my favorite things.

Yup, for this table scape...the only thing I needed to buy were the place mats and flags!  Actually these "place mats" are tee-towels from the dollar store.  Because they were a bit long, I just folded one 3" edge under and attached with a little fabric glue.
...

These flags you can buy at most craft stores.  They're also fun to stick in your existing potted plants!  These lil' terracotta pots filled with sand quickly became candle votives.  I had wanted to paint the pot's rim blue, but ended up using a little painter's tape instead!

And since I don't have red, white or blue napkin ring holders...I tied these napkins with a little raphia!
...

Okay, I'm sharing this patriotic tablescape to these fabulous days...

Guest Blogger...Rebekah from Potholes & Pantyhose!

I'm so excited to have the H-i-l-a-r-i-o-u-s Rebekah from Potholes & Pantyhose guest posting today!  From the moment I came across her blog, I knew she was fun and a little quirky...but the girl has got a "think outside the design box" attitude I JUST LOVE!  Well today is no exception because Rebekah has whipped up a funky coat rack that you will not forget anytime soon...here she is!

Hello all you Fabulous Gals! I’m Rebekah from www.potholesandpantyhose.com and I am excited to be a guest today!

At Potholes & Pantyhose, I blog about touring with my musician hubby, my home life-which usually involves some type of remodeling project, my photography, and any Arts and Crap that I happen to make. I try to maintain a somewhat normal life. However, normalcy keeps escaping me.

Today, I have a coat rack project that is simple, unique and involves dealing with my weird love of all things deer right now. I desperately needed a coat rack, but couldn’t find anything that was different enough to stand out. I am bohemian by nature, my hubby is a modernist and the outside of our home is traditional. So what says compromise better than deer hooves?

What you will need:

Wood Paneling-I bought my 3/4” tongue and groove from Habitat for Humanity

3/4” x 1” ‘L’ shaped trim

Deer Hooves-I bought mine off ebay for $5 a piece

Lag Screws-mine are 2”

Epoxy

Oops Paint-I used glossy black

Paintbrush

Level

Tape Measure

Sawzall with metal blade, or a hand saw with metal blade

Skill Saw with a wood blade

Square

Hammer

Drill & Drill bit a little smaller than your lag screws

Finish Nailer, Nails & Compressor (or you can use ‘brad’ nails & a hammer)

Stud finder

My wood was pretty damaged in several areas. I determined that I had enough to make a 30” x 34” coat rack. I marked the pieces that I wanted and drew a ‘cut’ line using my square.

Using my skill saw, I cut those suckers down and then double checked for accuracy. I always double check myself. My accuracy tends to be unreliable. I guess you could call me ‘reliably unreliable’.

Find your studs by using a ‘stud finder’ or tapping a hammer lightly against the wall. Starting with your top board, make sure it’s level it before finish nailing it straight to the wall, hitting the studs. Continue using your finish nailer to tack the rest of the boards into place. I painted my ‘L’ shaped trim black and cut the ends to fit at a 45 degree angle. Frame in the wood paneling with your trim, finish nailing it around all four sides.

Unless your deer hooves already have a screw mounted in them, clamp the heads of your lag screws with a table vice and use a metal bladed sawzall or hand saw to cut the heads off of the screws. I give you permission to say, “Off with their heads!” loud enough to wake the neighbors.

Insert your headless lag screw into your deer hoof and fill that sucker with epoxy. Don’t be stingy. I used an entire package of epoxy on my five hooves. It got a little crazy around here.

Let the hooves dry for a day or more.

Using your level, mark where you would like your hooves to be attached on the wood paneling. Drill pilot holes into your wood paneling.

Now comes the fun part! Screw your deer hooves into the paneling and stand back to see your creation.

What a great bohemian/modern/traditional coat rack you have! You should be proud of your diversity.
Come and visit me, Rebekah, at www.potholesandpantyhose.com to see more of my Arts & Crap projects!

Thanks Finding Fabulous for having me today!

Thank you Rebekah for sharing this unique coat rack!  And yes "bohemian" is a great way to describe this baby...truly a one of a kind creation!  You've got to visit Rebekah at Potholes & Pantyhose if your looking for more unique and fun design ideas.  You'll love her...the girl is a riot!

Guest Blogger...Amy from Positively Splendid!

We've got Amy from Positively Splendid in the house...WAHOO!  Amy can do it all...I'm talkin' cooking, crafting, decorating, sewing, scrap booking.  And her blog chronicles it all as this cute mamma tackles all things domestic, with her three little ones in tow I might add.  I'm so excited because Amy has a fabulous silhouette project to share with us today.
..
.
Hello! I am Amy, and I am so thrilled to have the honor to guest post for Jane today!

My cozy little corner of the blogging world is known as Positively Splendid, a place for those seeking inspiration in cooking, crafting and raising a family.

Positively Splendid

Having three children in stair-step fashion has prompted me to develop a true passion for just about all things domestic: cooking, sewing, scrap booking, home decorating and more. Positively Splendid is the chronicle of my quest to create an inviting environment in which our love for one another can grow and flourish.
One thing you'll notice quickly upon visiting my blog: I am currently fairly obsessed with personalized silhouette art. Silhouette projects are popping up all throughout the blog community of late, and for good reason! How often do you have the opportunity to create dynamic home decor that is also meaningful beyond measure?

For the framed silhouette vignette project I am going to share with you today, you could most certainly use a traditional print/trace/cut method for creating your silhouettes, but I encourage you to check out my digital silhouette tutorial to find out how to create digital versions of your silhouettes you can use for everything from home decor to paper crafts to blog design!

All set? Let's get started creating one of these little beauties...

For each vignette, you will need:

8" x 10" tabletop frame
Spray paint (optional)
Paper trimmer
1 piece of patterned paper for background, trimmed to 8" x 10"
1 piece of coordinating card stock, trimmed to 5-3/8" x 7-3/8"
One silhouette grouping (or a single silhouette, if you prefer), printed onto high quality photo paper, trimmed down to 5" x 7"
Acid-free adhesive roller
Foam adhesive dots
Dimensional letter stickers

To begin, spray paint your frame in your chosen color if you so desire so that it can be drying while you work on the rest of the project. You'll be multi-tasking without even realizing it! :) Remember to wash your hands VERY well before handling the photo paper if you get any paint on your fingers, because you will otherwise wind up with a smudged mess! After that...

(Step 1) Use your paper trimmer to cut your patterned paper, card stock and silhouette to the dimensions specified above.

(Step 2) Center your silhouette grouping on your card stock mat; adhere with acid-free adhesive tape.

(Step 3) Adhere your letter stickers with your chosen sentiment below your silhouettes.

(Step 4) Adhere foam adhesive dots around the perimeter of your card stock mat.

(Step 5) Carefully center your completed panel onto your background and

(Step 6) press gently to adhere. The dimension of the foam adhesive dots really takes this project to the next level!

Once you've completed the steps above, insert your finished vignette into your open frame. (Meaning: leave the glass out!) Part of the charm of this project is the dimension of the various layers, and you don't want to obscure that with a boring ol' piece of glass.

And that's a wrap!

Some helpful tips:
If you are doing a grouping of silhouettes as I have done here, I recommend creating and saving each individual silhouette as a jpeg, then placing each of those images into a new blank document to create your grouping to print out. That way, if you want to go back later down the road and work with each silhouette individually, you'll be able to do so without any hassle.
It is my own personal preference to add extra dimension by stacking the foam dots in two's, but you can most certainly use just one dot in each space if you would like.

To add stability to your finished project, I recommend adhering your finished vignette to the frame's glass before framing. If you want to use the frame for another purpose later down the road, you won't kick yourself for having thrown it out. ;)
Thanks so much, Jane, for having me over today. It's been tons of fun!

********************

You are welcome Amy and THANK YOU for sharing your fun n' colorful silhouette...I am in LOVE!  And like you said above...the silhouette trend isn't just wall art, it's about capturing precious images of our little ones that we will treasure forever...love that!

Give Amy a visit if your looking for more fabulous domestic ideas and inspirations.  I'm tellin' ya...the girl does it all at Positively Splendid!
